CLEMENS ASCHER

Yapı Kredi bomontiada, Fourth Floor
8-18 October
Open Everyday 10 a.m – 8 p.m

Austrian photographer Clemens Ascher is a storyteller, one whose allure is hard to resist within the world of contemporary photography. He explores themes such as social control, alienation from nature, and other contemporary realities through his seductive, surreal photography.

For the series, A Modernist Lunchbreak, Ascher drew inspiration from workers in office buildings. He takes ‘familiar’ figures and carefully places them inside the universe that he has created. In Hitchhiking USA, the artist focused on life in America, as well as on dreams and freedoms. On Pleasure Grounds serves as a reflection of a fictional amusement arcade, through Ascher’s eyes.

Creating abstract spatial compositions full of surreal figures, Ascher explores the relationship between the modernist vision of the past and contemporary sociological phenomena. Throughout his works, Ascher explores the subliminal effect of colours and repetitive expression.

Open Everyday 10 a.m – 8 p.m

Ouka Leele (born B.rbara Allende Gil de Biedma, 1957) is one of the most important representatives of the Spanish countercultural movement, La Movida. She is best known for her exuberant creations that embrace the living moment. Redolent of early 20th century Surrealism, her monochrome photographs do not seek to replicate reality, but instead serve as sketches – the basis for her vibrant paintings.

Since her breakthrough 1978 series, La Peluqueria, Ouka Leele’s work has always been received enthusiastically. This inspired her collaboration with J.W. Anderson where she created a capsule wardrobe for Loewe’s 2017 Spring/ Summer collection. Her works have been exhibited at the 1987 S.o Paulo Biennale, the 2010 Shanghai Biennale and Fondation Cartier, amongst others. Over the course of her career she has inspired artists such as Lubaina Himid, Yue Minjun and Rowan Papier.

OPPO MOBILE PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

8-18 October
Open Everyday 10 a.m – 8 p.m

The ‘capture the moment’ mission has taken on a new meaning with the advent of mobile photography. The OPPO Mobile Photography Exhibition brings together the moments captured by well-known figures with OPPO phones, using the slogan #MyLifeisMyCollection. Creating a bridge between time and space, digital images are transformed from being the memory of those who took them to a story that tells them.

Didem Soydan’s black-and-white Istanbul shots emphasise the strong bond between the city and its people. Photographs taken by traveller Kerimcan Akduman during his travels from Japan to Brazil are like a diary. Koray Özpalamutçu’s shots are sleek enough to rival those taken with professional cameras. Murat Dağaslan’s photographs, which could almost serve as a lesson in the use of light and colour, capture not only the moments themselves but also the moods. Constructing the most well-known images of Istanbul from scratch, Sefa Yamak explores the endless possibilities in photography. Last but not least, Umut Eker honours experimentation by capturing both the static and dynamic aspects of spontaneous moments.

AES+F
ALLEGORIA SACRA

Zülfaris Karaköy
8-18 October
Open Everyday 10 a.m – 7 p.m

AES+F work at the intersection of traditional media, photography, video and digital technology. They define their practice as a kind of ‘social psychoanalysis’ through which they reveal and explore the values, vices and conflicts of contemporary global culture. First formed as AES Group in 1987 by Tatiana Arzamasova, Lev Evzovich and Evgeny Svyatsky, the collective became AES+F when Vladimir Fridkes joined in 1995.

They achieved worldwide recognition and acclaim in the Russian Pavilion at the 52nd Biennale di Venezia in 2007 with Last Riot, the first in a trilogy of large-scale, multi-channel video installations that have come to define the AES+F aesthetic. The second of the series, The Feast of Trimalchio (2009), appeared in Venice in 2009, and the third, Allegoria Sacra (2011), debuted at the 4th Moscow Biennale in 2011.

Maintaining their signature style, Allegoria Sacra is the final part of the Liminal Space Trilogy. Named after Giovanni Bellini’s eponymous painting, dated 1487, which hangs in the Uffizi Gallery, AES+F’s Allegoria Sacra represents Purgatory.

Taking place in a futuristic international airport Allegoria Sacra serves as a metaphor for limbo, where the souls of ‘righteous sinners’ await their fate, and weaves complex global issues into visually compelling metaphors, letting them unfold in the neutral transitory space of an airport, where all kinds of things can temporarily coexist before going to their destination. AES+F combine recognisable motifs from art history and pop-culture, such as the numerous allusions to Stanley Kubrick’s film 2001: A Space Odyssey.

GREAT EMPTINESS

8-18 October
Open Everyday 10 a.m – 7 p.m

Billions of people across the globe have become physically isolated, held captive by the COVID-19 pandemic. On the verge of reshaping the ways in which we represent, affect and sense urban space, we need to recognise, define and assume this great emptiness we are facing. Great Emptiness reveals the unprecedented desolation of public spaces within the mega-city, with its selection of archived drone footage. From highways to car parks, from airports to train stations, the absence of the flow of activity that shapes the urban space encloses a strange gaze on the familiar.

Humanity – invisible, yet undeniably present.

Aerial imagery may well serve as an impartial analytical device to interrogate urban conditions. On the other hand, the sensation of the city during the quarantine period evokes Lautréamont’s poetry in which we ’experience’ a spectacular reality in a very Surrealist impression.

The founder of Studio Rino, Emre Dörter is an architectural photographer and videographer, whose artworks have been featured in international exhibitions. Mustafa Erkatırcı is a drone operator, aerial photographer and videographer. Serdar Ateşer is a musician, composer and sound designer

Extending more than 20 km in length, the City Walls of Istanbul serve different functions in different districts – yet they ultimately reveal a sublime abandoned loneliness. Metin Çavuş describes the Walls of Istanbul as ‘uncanny places, where the silence of death can be experienced, surrounded by walls and wild trees and plants, right beside the dynamic city’.

The academic artist’s series of black-and-white photographs, taken with a medium-format analogue camera in 2017-18, was published into a book by Özyeğin University Press in autumn 2019, titled Sublime and Secluded. Çavuş also collaborates with international contemporary artists, with the resulting works having been exhibited at several prominent art institutions and exhibitions as Tate Britain, SFMOMA, and the Venice Biennale of Architecture.
